The notorious Churchills Club in London’s Bond Street opened in the 1960s and was run by Bruce Brace and Harry Meadows in association with south London gangster Billy Howard. The Club featured a burlesque type show with singers and dancers and was frequented by all top drawer villains and gangsters including ‘Mad’ Frankie Fraser and the Kray Brothers.
Indeed it was at this club that hostess Lisa Prescott had a very bad time in December 1966 after being picked up by members of the Kray firm. Prescott was taken to a flat in Barking where Frank ‘The Mad Axenan’ Mitchell was hiding out after being sprung from Dartmoor by the Kray twins. Prescott was paid to ‘entertain’ Mitchell and he quickly fell head over heels in love with her. Their affair was to be short lived though and on Christmas Eve of 1966, Mitchell was taken to a van outside the flat and shot because the Krays found him hard to control.
This item is a genuine pigskin cigarette case sold from this very club. A rare and fascinating piece of vintage gangland memorabilia. I have never seen another.
