Formerly once one of the most feared and brutal gangsters in Britain, French grew up in Toxteth and began his life of crime as a petty mugger and house burglar. But, as the drugs business boomed in the wake of the Toxteth riots, he began to rob city barons of their huge fortunes, torturing them with violence until they paid up – earning him his Devil nickname. In total it was estimated that over the course of his infamous career he managed to net over £20million in total and was the man who set Curtis ‘Cocky’ Warren on his way – justifying the statement that crime does in fact pay.
